How do I know when to clean my filter/backwash?

Backwashing should be done when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI over your starting pressure reading. Your starting pressure is the initial pressure reading immediately following cleaning or backwashing your filter. For example, if your starting pressure reading was 15 PSI, then you would backwash once the pressure increases to 23-25 PSI. Another indicator is diminished flow from your return jet.

Do we have different store hours in the summer?

Will you install my pool liner?

While we stock a multitude of above ground pool replacement liners, we do not currently offer installation services. We do offer a list of independent contractors in our area. Please note Olympia Pools is not affiliated with these contractors.

What is CYA/cyanuric acid?

Cyanuric Acid/CYA is used to stabilize chlorine. Without the presence of CYA chlorine will degrade rapidly, diminishing its ability to kill bacteria and keep your water clean and clear. We recommend keeping your CYA level around 20 for most 3-step chlorine programs.

Cyanuric Acid is not necessary on all sanitizer programs; such as Nature’s Pure or Baquacil, which do not rely on chlorine for sanitation.

Can I use any sand for my sand filter?

All pool filters require the use of 20 grade silica sand. This pool grade filter sand is a must! Using the incorrect grade of sand can wreak havoc on your pool water causing algae and cloudy water, even when water analysis indicates proper balance.

How often should I drain and fill my hot tub?

Approximately every 6 months!

Can I fill up my pool/hot tub with water that runs through my water softener?

We recommend filling without your softener; however, if using the softened water is preferred, remember to have your water professionally tested and adjust your hardness to ideal range.

Why does my water smell?

Smelly water could be related to source water, improper water balance, and/or bacterial growth. Start by balancing the pH and Total Alkalinity to ideal range (pH 7.2 - 7.8ppm and Total Alkalinity 80-120ppm), followed by super-oxidation. If using chlorine or bromine as a sanitizer the oxidizing agent should be chlorine shock. If using Baquacil, then Baquacil Oxidizer.

Of course, you can bring us a water sample to have it professionally tested as well!

Why is my hot tub not heating?

First, ensure the water is at the correct level. Then, remove the filter from the hot tub and reset the breaker. Give the hot tub up to 24 hours to see if it heats to the desired temperature. If it does, it’s an easy fix and you simply need to replace the filter. If not, check to see if the hot tub is in economy mode. If the hot tub is tripping the breaker, a service call is needed.

What should I focus on the most to keep my water balanced?

The key indicators for good water balance are pH, Total Alkalinity, Hardness and Sanitizer. Keeping good water balance will help prevent cloudy water and algae formation.
